Use visual models along with the standard algorithm to quickly and effectively teach your students how to multiply decimals with this comprehensive digital resource pack.

Students will have a more hands-on approach to “see” what it looks like to multiply decimals by whole numbers and multiply decimals by decimals with models and the standard algorithm, as well as area models.  They will also be able to connect the visual models to the standard algorithm.  It’s great for kinesthetic learners as well as students that may struggle with memorizing algorithms.

This resource is complete, comprehensive, and easy to follow with a clear format.  It is low-prep and easy to assign to a sub and contains engaging activities.  If your students are struggling conceptually, this resource is for you!

Standard: 5.NBT.7

This resource is also part of my 5th Grade Math Year-Long Curriculum Bundle.

How Can You Use This?

Introduce each skill with the detailed set of notes and sample problem in Google Slides.  I suggest doing this in a whole group setting and pulling the slides up on a Smartboard if you’re in person or share the screen online if you’re teaching virtually.

Gradually release students to practice independently using the practice slides.  There are 2 provided (only 1 for the area models section) as well as a “create your own” slides activity.  This is great to provide to students who are fast finishers or understand the concept quickly.  They can create their own and share with a friend and have them complete it.

When both skills have been taught, provide additional practice using the digital task cards.  Review both skills with the digital task cards and assess mastery with the final quiz when you feel students are ready.

Testimonials

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  Great resource! Getting to not only practice the standard algorithm of multiplying decimals but actually getting to manipulate the model is extremely helpful in understanding the problem.  - Melissa M.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  This is a great resource to use with distance learning. Having the students complete the models was very helpful. I LOVED that each practice set had a video that explained how to complete the assignment.  - Kelly H.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  The students commented on how much better it was to learn this concept using the slides to model each problem instead of just doing "book work".  They got excited when we practiced the various slides!  - Kristen B.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  AMAZING resource for distance learning! Trying to convert visual models into something digital is exhausting and this resource was a tremendous help! It was user friendly and an easy tool for students to see how to multiply decimals.   - April M.
